ENDSARS PROTEST: A CRY AGAINST COLONIALISM IN DEMOCRACY

EndSARS protest was an exceptional movement and unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. It was a display of human limitation to torture and injustice. The protest manifested the popular saying If you cross my limit, I will also cross your limit and you will know my level of limit. Truly, the protest was an expression of lingering and long standing ‘societal absurdity which was long overdue. The intimidation of youth by their so-called friends had pushed them to the streets to fearlessly speak for their right.

The protest as it sounds is a cry to stop the Special Anti–Robbery Squad (SARS) - a fragment of the Nigerian police responsible for crime prevention. It is noteworthy to state that the protest was not against institution, or rather the unit, but a bellow to stop the evil perpetrations and propositions of individuals all in the name of SARS. The endSARS protest lasted days, against all odds of curfew and intimidation. Also, thanks to private organisations and individuals who stood firm by the protesters to recognize and rebuild the broken walls of Nigeria.

The endSARS protest was a reflection of our failed public security. Substituting Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) for SAR tagged an old wine in a new wineskin, no wonder it was buried before its birth. People revolted not just for selfish interest, but because SWAT is a mirror of the former, regardless of change in outlook, objectives, outfits and other refurbishments, the wine still remains the same and history will surely repeat itself. It will be risky going through the peril of protest without positive results or even worse.

Protest is inevitable in human race and should never be regarded as coup or a plan to snatch power. It is a grievance for change, clamour for right against wrong, a cry for transformation, a call to order and a complete norm of democracy. It is not a moment to display supremacy or power once it is peaceful and harmonious. It is regretful that hoodlums hijacked the protest and frustrated selfless efforts and sacrifice of peaceful and progressive protesters.

Praying, hoping, wishing, mourning and fasting for a better Nigeria is as working towards a better self. It is not magic but a desired and deliberate demonstration of truth, democracy, inclusiveness, accountability, integrity and selflessness.

Rise up to build a better Nigeria.
