Crisis Management

Crisis management is primary to public safety. We encounter unforeseen and extreme events in our day-to-day activities- public violence, accidents, public defamation, civil disturbance among others. The impacts of the identified crisis and many more range from low to high depending on the management and crisis readiness. Research has revealed that crisis show the preparedness level of every organisation (private or public).

Public security is responsible for the safety of the communities and it is important for all emergency responders to respond to management demands. It has been identified that instead of public security sector engaging in crisis management, they are majorly involved in managing the crisis. The former is a level of preparedness to prevent or mitigate the effects and impacts of crisis while the latter is the responsive actions when crisis occur. This is against the definition and approach of crisis management in public administration. Crisis management should be a systematic, conscious, deliberate and coordinated efforts to prevent catastrophic events that may arise in the society. It is a pre-crisis approach strategised to minimize  threat in the sustainability of the environment and the people - resilience.

Resilience in the event of crisis is a concept of responsiveness imbedded in inclusiveness, openness and communication. Crisis can only be regarded as crisis if there are vulnerabilities and risk and resilience can be determined by the ability to project possible occurrence, assess the risk and vulnerabilities, map out strategies for response and recovery. Achieving resilience is through advanced crisis planning and management. The operational failure in crisis management weakens the confidence of citizens in government ability to protect and safeguard them.
